A fibroblast with an elliptical nucleus is shown in the image. Observe the bluish staining of its cytoplasm. This basophilic appearance indicates that the cytoplasm contains many ribosomes and a large amount of RNA, suggesting that the fibroblast is actively synthesizing proteins and other macromolecules.
Two other cells can also be observed. One has a round, strongly stained nucleus and may be a mast cell. Mast cells are resident cells of connective tissue and are often difficult to identify in routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained sections.
The other cell is a lymphocyte, a small transient cell approximately the size of a red blood cell. It can usually be recognized by its round nucleus surrounded by a very small amount of bluish cytoplasm. Because this cytoplasm is often not visible in histological sections, lymphocytes are usually identified mainly by their nuclei.
Most of the remaining area of the image is occupied by collagen fibers.
